Earthlings

Starfish

A little boy was walking along the beach and came across hundreds of starfish stranded at low tide and dying in the hot sun. He began to pick them up, one by one and gently put them back in the higher waters offshore.
His father said “There’s hundreds of them, you can’t save them all. I’m sorry son, but what you are doing won’t make a difference.”
The little boy continued on and quietly whispered to each starfish as he put it back in the water, "It makes a difference to this one."

Motivation

“The problem, often not discovered until late in life, is that when you look for things in life like love, meaning, motivation, it implies they are sitting behind a tree or under a rock. The most successful people in life recognize, that in life they create their own love, they manufacture their own meaning, they generate their own motivation. For me, I am driven by two main philosophies, know more today about the world than I knew yesterday. And lessen the suffering of others. You'd be surprised how far that gets you.

Neil deGrasse Tyson's response on Reddit when asked "What can you tell a young man looking for motivation in life itself?"

Alopecia

This body will be a corpse.

Joyful to have
Such a human birth,
Difficult to find,
Free and well-favored.

But death is real,
Comes without warning.
This body
Will be a corpse.

Unalterable
Are the laws of karma;
Cause and effect
Cannot be escaped.

Samsara
Is an ocean of suffering,
Unendurable,
Unbearably intense.

Composed by the Vidyadhara Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche

Exhibit 13

"Exhibit 13" is the last song on the Blue Man Group's album The Complex. The song's title comes from a scorched piece of paper which blew into the Carroll Gardens neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York on September 11, 2001 immediately after the attacks on the World Trade Center. The audio intercut in the song is recitation of the contents of other documents found in that same park.

2013

I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.

Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You're doing things you've never done before, and more importantly, you're Doing Something.
So that's my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody's ever made before. Don't freeze, don't stop, don't worry that it isn't good enough, or it isn't perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.
Whatever it is you're scared of doing, do it. Make your mistakes, next year and forever.
Neil Gaiman
